Black maternal mortality statistics have not shifted in the past thirty years.
The maternal mortality rate for Black patients is four to five times higher than it is for White patients. This is just one example of racism as a health and national crisis, but it is a particularly tragic one.

Author Biography
Sabia C. Wade is a radical full spectrum doula, reproductive justice advocate, equity consultant, and Somatic Educator based in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2017 she founded the nonprofit For The Village in San Diego and in 2018, she founded Birthing Advocacy Doula Trainings (BADT). She also launched The Black Doula Podcast in March 2021, and Essence magazine stated she was “one of nine black doulas to follow now.” Her work has been featured in Business Insider, Motherly, Well + Good, The San Diego Union Tribune, Healthline, and KPBS, among other outlets. She has appeared on several podcasts including Evidence-Based Birth, Magamamas, Happy as a Mother, and Birth Kweens.
