This is a really valuable and insightful book for those working with children (whether in health or education), and also for families trying to learn how best to help, support and inform themselves.
The book starts with a hard-hitting introduction, outlining in brief the stories of some of the many children who have committed suicide as a result of bullying. If this doesn't make the reader want to find out more, nothing will!
The book goes on to look at the three groups of participants - the bullies, the bullied and the bystanders. It examines their actions and their reactions and looks at ways of raising awareness among adults and peer groups and suggests helpful strategies for implementing change. It looks not only at bullying in a school setting, but also at bullying in a home setting, highlighting bullying behavior between siblings and by adults.
This book is easy to read. It is well laid out and clear. It even spends time explaining what is and what isn't bullying - and why, which can be a particularly difficult and contentious issue.
I really would recommend this book. It isn't expensive and is worth every penny.

Summary

It's the deadliest combination going: bullies who terrorize bullied kids who are afraid to tell, bystanders who watch, and adults who see the incidents as a normal part of childhood. All it takes to understand that this is a recipe for tragedy is a glance at headlines across the country. In this updated edition of The Bully, the Bullied, and the Bystander, which includes a new section on cyber bullying, one of the world's most trusted parenting educators gives parents, caregivers, educators—and most of all, kids—the tools to break the cycle of violence.

Drawing on her decades of work with troubled youth, and her wide experience in the areas of conflict resolution and reconciliatory justice, Barbara Coloroso explains:

-The three kinds of bullying, and the differences between boy and girl bullies

-Four abilities that protect your child from succumbing to bullying

-Seven steps to take if your child is a bully

-How to help the bullied child heal and how to effectively discipline the bully

-How to evaluate a school's antibullying policy

-And much more

This compassionate and practical guide has become the groundbreaking reference on the subject of bullying.
