Summary

Law school students are well trained and educated, but not alwys prepared for what comes next after their education. The divide between what is taught and what is desired by the outside world is large. This book aims to solve this divide. We will be the de facto resource that will bridge the gap from law school to interviewing, to job offer, to most importantly: succeeding with one’s new employer. We will do this in a novel way. The two authors will write the sections of the book that pertain to all law students. We will then get experts in every major field of law to talk specifically about how their transitions were different so that the book is applicable to anyone in law school. We will create a standard form of guest chapter so that the information is applicable and quality control is contained across the book.

What might a reader expect to get out of reading this book?

  • Making sense of why all law students study the classics (1st year). What one can use pragmatically as a lawyer;
  • What type of classes may benefit a student depending upon the type of law they want to practice. And the answers may surprise some;
  • Why every lawyer needs to study psychology. Why every lawyer needs to be a people person first;
  • What they don’t tell you in law school that employers and clients expect out of you;
  • Case studies / guest chapters for each major area of law and how that can and should affect your law school decision making;
  • Getting ready for the perfect interview. How to find the job;
  • You got the job. Now who do you succeed in the position;
  • Common mistakes that new lawyers make that limit careers and anger clients; and
  • Understanding the importance (or lack thereof) of law school rankings on your future.

Author Biography

JASON MENDELSON, JD, is a lawyer, entrepreneur, startup founder, venture capitalist, software engineer, criminal justice reformer and musician. He was an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado Law School for over a decade.

ALEX PAUL, JD, is a lawyer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He co-founded Giving Place, an online philanthropy platform, as well as Wealthgate Trust Company and Family Office.
