Summary

The ancient cultures of Mexico and Peru are most famous for their majestic architecture and religious practices. Less known, but equally intricate, are the myths supporting their beliefs; tales of the plumed god Quetzalcoatl and his enemy Tecatlipoca, Lord of the winds of the night and of Pachacamac, the Peruvian spirit of the earth. This detailed investigation shows the Toltec and Aztec cultures in Central Mexico, the Maya of Yucatan and the Incas of Peru. The eminent anthropologist and mythologist Lewis Spence describes their social organization, their intellectual achievements and their most important myths. This book presents a fascinating overview of civilizations that flourished in South and Central America before the arrival of the European conquerors.
