Summary

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

The rite of sexual and emotional passage of a young homosexual man highlights dramatic tensions in the repressive and discriminatory Liman society of the nineties.

“You can tell that things have changed because of the way you touch and are touched”. Fire is Better depicts the ups and downs of fantasy, violence, and pleasure in the life on a young homosexual man in Lima during the nineteen nineties. It is a story where sex, fear, beauty, cruelty, and love are all attributes of a memory that makes them indistinguishable—shrapnel in a body going through a revealing trance, considered, as the protagonist describes, an “instrument in the service of imagination’s need and desire”. Through a carefully crafted poetic language, José Carlos Yrigoyen knew how to portray the spirit of an era in his work, embodied in a young man, whose skin is a battlefield between his own yearnings and the world.
