Summary

Individuals suffering from autism and other related disorders exhibit widespread abnormalities of social interactions and communication as well as severely restricted interests and highly repetitive behavior.

In the past twenty-five years, the diagnoses of Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders, including Asperger's Syndrome, has increased dramatically.  Studies from the Center for Disease Control cite a prevalence rate for Autism of 1 out of every 150 children.

Fred Volkmar is the premier expert on Autism in the United States, and with Lisa Weisner, an experienced academic and practicing pediatrician, has created a resource for parents and teachers that is uniquely authoritative and easy for the lay person to use.  It includes unique coverage of medical and dental care for autistic children, as well as helpful summaries like "The 10 Most Preventable Health Problems," and "5 Questions to Ask Your Doctor at Every Visit."  It also includes a section of question and answers for parents that was found engaging and useful by parent reviewers.
